Deforestation in Rwanda became a pressing issue in last years as population increased, consequences were around and the issue accelerated by old trees which were not productive.
It is in that line Government of Rwanda set a vision 2030 plan in Afforestation and reforestation where 30% of surface will be covered by forests and Musanze took part.
Musanze as District located in northern region of Rwanda, has long been known for its breathtaking landscapes, with verdant mountains, hills and forests that attract tourists from around the world.
However, the district is now stepping up in a significant way to support the government’s ambitious reforestation efforts, aiming to restore and conserve Rwanda’s forests while mitigating climate change.

The journey began when Musanze District recognized the importance of its natural resources, particularly its forests in climate mitigation and set community work.
This vital activity done on 23 November 2024, in Mbwe cell, Gashaki Sector, Musanze District planed by district in partnership with Ministry of Interior (MININTER) and Local Community. This remarkable day ended up by four hectares (4ha) sloppy mountain covered by more than six thousand trees.
Lands owners appreciated the event and amplified their voices of joyful after knowing that the outcome will be their economy booster in different ways.
Mukamana Euphigenie, one of them, told UMURENGEZI that leaders gave her clarity that outcome of trees planted will boost her economy as land owner.
She said, “After this crucial activity, I am going to follow the development of those planted trees. I am happy that leader told us that forest will remain my interest as land owner not for Government even though we worked hand in hand in planting and provide nurseries followed by good advice.”
Kamanzi Emmanuel, Gashaki dweller, rose his emotion of joy and stay positive about interest on planting more trees after campaign on their importance.
He said, “This sloppy mountain was covered by old trees planted before my living! They were not productive. Our Government set reforestation program and we gain from it. We helped by our leaders and security organs to protect our land and Ruhondo lac from erosion which previously deteriorated our arable land and other properties.”
“I will protect those trees and follow their development, the outcome will be wealthy.” he added
Nsengimana Claudien, Mayor of Musanze District, highlight importance of the event, District future plan on reforestation and advices local community.
In his remark stated that: “This is the beginning of continuous plan of reforestation and afforestation. Not only provide timber and fuelwood for local communities, forest also plays a critical role in controlling soil erosion, enhancing agricultural productivity, protecting water resources and mitigate climate change.
Looking to the future, Musanze District aims to expand its reforestation projects even further, by increasing the number of tree nurseries and promoting climate-smart agriculture.”
“We advised the land owner, to protect those rooting trees, follow good practice in order to protect lac water body for the sake of our district wealth.” He also added.
In line with the government’s broader vision to restore 2 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, during the 2024-2025 Tree planting Season, a total of 65 million trees will be planted across the country, marking an increase of almost 2 million from the previous season’s 63 million. Additionally, the number of trees each household is required to plant has been raised from 3 to 5.
